Secret Garden

"It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place anyone could imagine...
...Mary had thought it must be different from other gardens which had not been left all by themselves so long; and indeed it was different from any other place she had ever seen in her life"
-The Secret Garden-
by Francis Hodgson Burnett

A tiny hidden garden sitting behind the old 18th-century house in a small fishing village in Scotland. This is where I`ve spent some peaceful and surprisingly warm summer evenings (by Scottish measures) letting my mind go and my hands create. And this is how my Secret Garden earrings collection was born. Surrounded by bumblebee buzz and seagull chitchat, with air pervaded by blooming flowers scent.

Fairies moved into the garden about a month after our arrival. They installed the door and quite gladly accepted donations of milk and small pieces of sweets. In return, I was rewarded with lovely songs and helpful advice on my creative process.

"Most of them really are flowers, but some of them are fairies. You never can be sure of them, but a good plan is to walk by looking the other way, and then turn round sharply.
Another good plan, which David and I sometimes follow, is to stare them down. After a long time they can’t help winking, and then you know for certain that they are fairies."

-Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens-
by Sir James Matthew Barrie

It seems quite obvious that my fairy friends completely took over the selection of ingredients, which I used to put inside of the earrings. They enjoyed browsing through my bottles of Okinawan sand treasures and picking the most whimsical elements. They also got me a pair of worn bumble bee wings and some tiny flowers from the neighborhood. And even shared a few bits of sea salt from the stores.

When we finished the work, we thought that we need to take a good photo. So we hang all of our creations on the branch, but then just sat quietly in the candlelight for a while.

It was a nice and strange vision. Memories and feelings, wrapped in wire twirls, hanging in a row and twinkling in the twilight.

Fairies also told me that each pair of earrings we made has a secret fairy name. I am not allowed to tell it, but it might just as easily jump straight into your head if you pick the right pair.

It was a good summer. A busy one. Not so much adventurous, but inspiring.
Let the summer dreams go on.
